William C. Helms, III
Retired member attorney
Mr. Helms’ bio as it appeared in 2013, the year of his retirement:
Thorough. Fair. Competent. Adjectives that hint at the kind of attorney Bill Helms is after 42 years of practicing law at the firm which bears his name. He is an attorney who is just as willing to spend an hour with a client needing to “put his affairs in order” as he is to defend the all-day deposition of a prominent architect.
A native of Atlanta, Georgia, Helms received his undergraduate degree from Emory University and his J.D. from the Emory University School of Law, where he was a member of Phi Delta Phi, Order of the Coif and the Bryan Society.
Helms is a certified mediator and arbitrator and holds a Martindale-Hubble Preeminent rating (the highest, formerly called AV.) He is listed in The Best Lawyers in America in the area of personal injury litigation and is a member of the South Carolina Defense Trial Attorneys Association (having served on its Executive Committee), the American Board of Trial Advocate and the International Association of Defense Counsel.
Like may South Carolinians, Helms enjoys the natural resources of the Low Country. A habitual early riser, Bill trades his office for a boat on weekend mornings, fishing for bass, trout and flounder. He also serves as a lector at St. Philip’s Episcopal Church, where he is a member. He previously served on the board of directors for the Preservation Society of Charleston and the board of trustees for Charleston Day School.
