John Fletcher first gained a respect for the intricacies of legal research and writing, while serving as a Research Editor on the University of Pittsburgh Law Review during law school. This admiration of the intellectual aspects of the practice of law — and of the law itself — has remained with John throughout his career. Over his nearly twenty years of practice, John has been deeply involved with many of Barnwell Whaley’s most complex and challenging cases, in such varied areas of the law as antitrust, intellectual property and professional malpractice. In 2016, John added mediations services to his portfolio of services as he attained his South Carolina Board of Arbitrator and Mediator Certification from the South Carolina Bar Association.
As he embarked on his career, John was fortunate to work with highly respected attorneys who heavily included him in their complex work. While still in law school in his native state of Pennsylvania, John assisted in the research of several items of proposed legislation and was heavily involved in the drafting of a complex brief before the United States Court of Appeals for the Fourth Circuit on an uncertain area of Section 1983 liability. Working as an attorney in Pittsburgh, he assisted in the litigation of numerous complex matters, including large products liability cases, class actions, toxic torts and CERCLA litigation. These experiences afforded him the opportunity to work on cases in federal and state courts throughout the country. During this time, John published numerous articles in the Journal of the Allegheny County Bar Association (PA).
Ultimately, John and his family answered the call of the Lowcountry (and no snow in the winter) and relocated to beautiful Charleston, where he began working with Barnwell Whaley in 2004. It is a decision he has not regretted. Since joining Barnwell Whaley, John has carried a challenging, varied and complex caseload, with cases at all levels of both state and federal courts, including the United States Supreme Court. John has represented a diverse group of clients, from contractors to colleges to fellow lawyers.
When he is not practicing law, John lives in Mount Pleasant with his beautiful wife, Maria, and their two children. At home, he serves in his most important role: “daddy.” He enjoys sports of all varieties (especially following the Pitt Panthers).
