Barnwell Whaley celebrates 80 years as attorneys for businesses and professionals
Barnwell Whaley Patterson & Helms, LLC celebrates the 80th anniversary of the law firm on New Year’s Day, 2018. Colonel Nathaniel Barnwell and Ben Scott Whaley joined forces and opened their offices on Broad Street in downtown Charleston on January 1, 1938 and built a groundbreaking civil litigation defense firm. Although the firm’s namesakes, Nathaniel Barnwell, Ben Scott Whaley and Robert “Sonny” Patterson have passed on and William C. “Billy” Helms retired in 2013, their law partners continue to provide exceptional legal counsel and service to businesses and professionals with offices in both Wilmington, North Carolina and Charleston, South Carolina.
“It is an exciting time in the life of Barnwell Whaley,” commented managing member Randell Stoney, Jr. “We continue to respond to our clients needs by adding services beyond that of the traditional litigation of our founding members. The Barnwell Whaley of today not only provides excellent civil litigation defense, it also includes a full intellectual property team including three local patent attorneys, and a thriving business immigration and immigration litigation practice, in addition to the general expansion of the original footprint to all areas of the law that our clients need.” The members and associates of Barnwell Whaley are widely respected for their work in complex civil litigation matters, including insurance defense, patents, trademarks and intellectual property, professional liability defense, construction law, business law, business immigration, immigration litigation and products liability defense. The firm has also become renowned for its transactional work, including commercial finance, business formation and acquisition, and intellectual property. “It was such a privilege to learn to practice law under the tutelage of masters like Ben Scott Whaley, Sonny Patterson, and Billy Helms,” said Member Dawes Cooke. “They would be very pleased to see what we are doing today.”
The Barnwell Whaley firm logo has been redesigned to commemorate the 80th anniversary, and a firm history page has been added to the firm website featuring a number of the historical photographs and documents throughout the years.
