WILMINGTON, NC – A stalwart of the Charleston, SC legal community, Barnwell Whaley Patterson & Helms, LLC has opened its first office in North Carolina, the firm announced today. The new office, located in Wilmington, North Carolina, will enhance the firm’s ability to serve clients regionally as it continues a tradition of providing excellent client service to businesses and professionals. “We are excited to have a presence in the growing, vibrant area of Eastern North Carolina and welcome the addition of Chris Hinnant, who will head our Wilmington office,” said Michael Barfield, a litigator and 15 year veteran of the firm. According to Barfield, “Many of our existing clients have grown to have regional footprints, but they still want Barnwell-Whaley to be their go-to law firm. That kind of loyalty is not something we take for granted. Chris Hinnant has been a close friend of our firm for years, so when his clients began to expand into South Carolina, the Wilmington office was an ideal solution. Barnwell Whaley has been serving businesses and professionals since 1938. We look forward to bringing our time tested approach to client service to Eastern North Carolina and beyond.”

The Barnwell Whaley Wilmington office, at 1427 Military Cutoff Road, is home to new member attorney Chris Hinnant, an accomplished civil litigator with a broad range of experience in a number of practice areas. Admitted to practice in both North and South Carolina, Hinnant has litigated hundreds of complex cases in both state and federal courts, including medical malpractice, construction defects, premises liability, dram shop claims, commercial disputes and personal injury, among others. As a commercial litigator, notable cases include Hinnant as the attorney of record for one of the largest real estate fraud cases in North Carolina history (his banking client was dismissed on a 12(b)(6) motion); and his assistance to a UK-based client in deciphering an embezzlement scheme, ultimately bringing fraud and civil RICO claims against the former employee for almost a million dollars in misappropriated funds. “Barnwell Whaley’s emphasis on handling complex litigation for both businesses and professionals was a comfortable fit for my practice” noted Hinnant. “I’m excited about this opportunity to help Barnwell Whaley expand into North Carolina and continue their long tradition of quality service to their clients.”

Prior to joining Barnwell Whaley, Hinnant has practiced for 19 years, in Wilmington and Raleigh, North Carolina. A graduate of the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill, Hinnant earned his juris doctor at Campbell University Norman Adrian Wiggins School of Law. In addition to being admitted to the state courts of North and South Carolina, he is admitted to the Eastern and Middle District Federal Court of North Carolina and the District of South Carolina Federal Court. He is a member of the New Hanover County Bar Association, the North Carolina Association of Defense Attorneys and the South Carolina Defense Trial Attorneys Association.

Established in Charleston in 1938, Barnwell Whaley Patterson & Helms, LLC, represents and counsels businesses and professionals in both North and South Carolina, throughout the United States in Federal Court, and beyond. Widely respected for their work in complex litigation matters, the firm’s 18 members and associates focus on the areas of complex civil litigation defense, patents, trademarks and intellectual property, professional malpractice defense, construction law, business law, business immigration, immigration litigation and products liability defense.
