Pam earned her law degree from the University of South Carolina School of Law. She is a highly decorated United States military veteran and was awarded a Purple Heart and numerous medals for outstanding service.

Christopher Hinnant Recognized as North Carolina Super Lawyer

Barnwell Whaley is pleased to announce that Christopher M. Hinnant has been named a North Carolina Super Lawyer. The recently released 2024 list celebrates fewer than five percent of attorneys in the state. Named since 2019, Chris is noted for his stellar professional achievement in civil litigation and a high degree of peer recognition. Barnwell Whaley Patterson & Helms is thrilled to announce Jessica W. Stratta and Samuel J. Person have joined the firm as associates. Jessica is an experienced civil litigator with a diverse skillset encompassing liquor liability and dram shop, construction defect, and premises liability matters. Sam officially joined the firm as an associate following his role as a law clerk, centering his practice on trucking and transportation law.

Jessica earned her law degree from Charleston School of Law, where she was the associate editor-in-chief for the Resolved Law Review Journal, served on the trial advocacy board, and was president of the Environmental Law Society.

Sam earned his juris doctor, summa cum laude, from Charleston School of Law. While there, he won several CALI Awards, made Dean’s List all six semesters, and was a Presidential Honors Scholar. He was also a Moot Court Board Member, Trial Advocacy Board Member, Maritime Law Society member, and Second Amendment Association member.

Barnwell Whaley’s Successful 2023 Summer Associate Program

 

Barnwell Whaley’s 2023 summer associate program recently came to a close. The firm was thrilled to welcome two talented and hardworking law school students, Isabella Higgins and Emily White. Both rising 3Ls, Isabella attends the University of South Carolina School of Law, and Emily attends the Charleston School of Law.

Joining us from early May through the end of July, our summer associates had a busy time with us performing legal research and writing. They also shadowed BWPH attorneys and enjoyed attending mediations and depositions and learning about case management. We wish Isabella and Emily a fantastic third year in law school!

Barnwell Whaley recently enjoyed a significant presence at the South Carolina Defense Trial Attorneys’ Association annual Summer Meeting. With a strong practice focus on litigation defense, many BWPH attorneys have long been members of SCDTAA. Held in the lush mountains in Asheville, North Carolina, their Summer Meeting brings together attorneys and professionals for educational programming, networking, and recreational events.

Managing member Michael Barfield presented an emerging leaders breakout session. He discussed managing relationships with insurance professionals, including practical considerations and ways to meet and exceed their expectations. A seasoned attorney with over 25 year s of experience, he is a current member of the SCDTAA board of directors. Barfield’s practice comprises professional negligence, construction litigation, commercial litigation, property-related litigation, and personal injury. Additionally, he has a substantial real estate practice focused on the fractional ownership industry.

Mary Linton, an associate at the firm, also spoke at the meeting. She joined a panel of industry experts to discuss defending against abuses of the Tyger River Doctrine. A savvy litigator, Linton enjoys a multi-faceted practice including personal injury, premises liability, dram shop defense, and construction.

Barnwell Whaley Patterson & Helms is thrilled to announce Kelli Sanders has joined the firm as Chief Operating Officer. With over 20 years of experience in the legal administration profession, Kelli brings deep expertise in human resources, finance, and project management. Based in the firm’s Charleston, South Carolina office, she leads all firm operations, including finance, recruiting, human resources, employee benefits, technology, and marketing.

Kelli earned her Master of Science in Legal Administration from Denver University, Sturm College of Law. Understanding the vital importance of positive employee and client experiences, Kelli holds several certifications, including Legal Project Management, Legal Management Finance Specialist, Legal Management Human Resources Specialist, and is a Certified Legal Manager. Dedicated to ensuring health and wellness in the workplace, she also has her Mental Health First Aid Certification.

In the legal professional community, Kelli devotes ample time to the Association of Legal Administrators and the Society for Human Resource Management. Actively involved with the ALA for many years, her term on the Mile High chapter Board of Directors concluded in 2023. Named Managing Member in January of 2022, Barfield began his legal career with BWPH in 2001. Barnwell Whaley Names New Managing Member

January 26, 2022 – Barnwell Whaley Patterson & Helms is pleased to announce Michael Barfield has been named Managing Member. He assumed the new role on January 1, 2022. He succeeds Randell C. Stoney, who has led the firm since 2017.

Barnwell Whaley Welcomes Mary Linton

October 25, 2021 – Barnwell Whaley is pleased to announce that Mary Linton has joined the firm as an associate.

Ms. Linton enjoys a multi-faceted practice comprised of personal injury, premises liability, dram shop defense, and construction. Prior to joining Barnwell Whaley in 2021, Ms. Linton worked with a highly-respected southeast regional defense firm in Charleston. Following law school, she served as a judicial law clerk for the Honorable Deadra L. Jefferson, Resident Judge for the Ninth Judicial Circuit, from 2016-2017. Ms. Linton’s prior experience in litigation has allowed her the opportunity to represent clients from the inception of a case through mediation and trial.

Ms. Linton earned her Juris Doctor from the University of South Carolina and her undergraduate degree from the College of Charleston. While in law school, Ms. Linton served as the Articles Editor for the ABA Real Property, Trust and Estate Journal, was a member of the Phi Delta Phi legal fraternity and served as a student mentor. During law school, she clerked for the South Carolina legislative counsel and a mid-size defense firm, where she gained valuable experience that led her to continue her career in litigation.

Ms. Linton currently resides in Charleston with her husband and beloved dog, Corduroy. Outside of the office, she is an avid equestrian and ardent Gamecock football fan. She is also a zealous supporter of the H.O.P.E Acres Rescue.

Justin Novak Elected to Sullivan’s Island Town Council

May 4, 2021 – Following a vigorously contested campaign, the residents of Sullivan’s Island showed up in historic numbers to re-elect incumbent Mayor Patrick O’Neil and add three new members to town council—Justin Novak, Gary Visser, and Scott Millimet. More than 1,100 residents voted in the election, roughly half of the island’s population.

Mr. Novak, Special Counsel with Barnwell Whaley, received the largest share of the vote of any candidate in the election. At Barnwell Whaley, Mr. Novak assists business and professional clients in navigating a wide variety of difficult challenges in a state-wide risk advisory, civil litigation, and dispute resolution practice. Certified as a mediator by the South Carolina Supreme Court Arbitrator and Mediator Certification Board, Mr. Novak also helps facilitate the negotiated resolution of disputes to avoid the time, resources, and expenses associated with litigation.
