Barnwell Whaley member attorney M. Dawes Cooke, Jr. was sworn in as the president-elect of the South Carolina Bar today, during the Bar’s House of Delegates meeting at Somerset Point in Pinopolis, SC. Cooke will serve alongside Elizabeth H. “Babs” Warner of Moncks Corner, who was sworn in as President for the 2017-2018 term.

A recognized leading attorney in the state, Cooke focuses his law practice at Barnwell Whaley in the areas of civil litigation, professional liability defense and personal injury litigation. He is also an accomplished certified mediator and arbitrator, an area for which he has been repeatedly recognized by Best Lawyers. Accolades from Super Lawyers, Benchmark Litigation and Chambers, among others, speak to the high level of his work for his clients and among his peers. Cooke’s devotion to work extends beyond the office to his community. He has served as past president of the Board of Directors of East Cooper Community Outreach, past president of the East Cooper Breakfast Rotary Club, past president of the Charleston County Bar, the Charleston Chapter of the American Board of Trial Advocates, the James L. Petigru American Inn of Court and past chairman of the South Carolina Commission on Judicial Independence, among others.  He looks forward to serving with the South Carolina Bar.
